Myopia, or nearsightedness, is a refractive error that makes far-away objects look blurry, but nearby objects are clear. This happens when the shape of the eye causes light to focus in front of the retina instead of on it. This occurs when either the eyeball grows too long from front to back or the cornea of the eye is curved too steeply. These problems can impact anyone, but it typically develops during childhood or adolescence. You are also more at risk of developing myopia if your family members have it.

Luckily, treatment options are easy. For younger patients, doctors will usually prescribe corrective lenses but LASIK surgery can also be used for those who are eligible.

What are my treatment options?

Myopia is most often treated with eyeglasses or contact lenses prescribed by a doctor to help you see clearly. However, LASIK surgery can also be used to alter the shape of the cornea so it can focus light correctly.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the causes of myopia?

Myopia happens when your eyeball grows too long from front to back or when there are problems with the shape of the cornea or lens. These issues make light focus in front of the retina instead of it, as a result far-away objects look blurry.

What are the common treatment options for myopia?

To treat myopia, doctors can prescribe corrective lenses that will allow you to see as clearly as possible. For more permanent treatment options, eligible patients can opt for LASIK surgery to correct the shape of the cornea.
