Hyperopia, also known as farsightedness or hypermetropia, is a refractive error that makes nearby objects look blurry. This happens when the eyeball grows too short from front to back or the cornea is too flat. As a result, light gets focused behind the retina rather than on it. Most people who are farsighted are born with it, but may not encounter any vision problems until they’re older at which reading glasses may be prescribed. In fact, you’re more prone to hyperopia if family members also have it. If left untreated, hyperopia can cause eye strain and headaches.

Children with severe cases are at risk of other eye conditions such as crossed eyes or amblyopia (lazy eye) - so it’s important to get regular eye exams so your doctor can make sure you’re seeing as clearly as possible.

What are my treatment options?

The most common treatment options for farsightedness are corrective lenses prescribed by your doctor. Another treatment option for eligible adults is LASIK surgery to alter the shape of the cornea.
